Cannibal Mukbang (2023) - dir. Aimee Kuge

Thank you, Tubi, for giving me this absolute banger of a flick.

Overall Rating: ⛧⛧⛧⛧

For a debut film, you can really tell that Aimee put a lot of passion into it. It’s beautifully shot, less campy than I expected, but exponentially enjoyable.

It’s difficult to criticize indie horror on a personal level, just because I really do think it keeps the genre growing and alive. However, the character portrayals do feel like they aren’t seamlessly fleshed out. I wish there would have been way more of a chance to get to know the characters overall.

I was genuinely surprised at the narrative shift. I went in fully expecting it to be an exploration of just a budding romance overshadowed by one (or both) of them being a cannibal (and the potential secrets that could have developed or evolved because of it), so when it turned into a full out rape-revenge film I was caught off-guard.

Another personal gripe, which honestly is just my fault for even watching, is I abhor the mouth sounds/up close shots of people eating. I know the title even fully announces it deals with mukbangs, so I knew it would be inevitable, but I did still hate it.

The film exceeds however, in its usage of cinematography and practical effects. The decor, the makeup, the lighting, the costuming, all of it is beautiful.

The visceral scenes of skin-flaying, dismemberment, the charcuterie board of the leads victims, are all very impressively well done.

The ending may be a bit predictable, but it is overall a recommended watch!
